Catch it

Step by step, from first cast to landing.

Step-by-step: how to catch it

  1. Go where it lives: From Pakistan and India (Ganges, Indus, Brahmaputra, Krishna, Cauvery) through Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand to Vietnam (Mekong), Malaysia, Sumatra and Java.
  2. Rig up: Medium-heavy 7–8 ft spinning or baitcasting rod. 50–80 lb mono or light wire — the teeth chew through light line.
  3. Pick your bait: Live or dead fish, fish strips and frogs. Lures: Deep-diving crankbaits, soft swimbaits and spinners, especially at dusk; often caught in Thai fishing parks on lures.
  4. Fish it: Fish a live or dead fish on the bottom near deep holes and undercut banks at dusk and into the night, or work deep crankbaits slowly along drop-offs.
  5. Time it: Dusk, night and dawn. No tide on rivers; in tidal lower rivers, moving water helps.
Fishing techniques

Fish a live or dead fish on the bottom near deep holes and undercut banks at dusk and into the night, or work deep crankbaits slowly along drop-offs.

BigJoe's tip

Wallago often grab the bait and swim off slowly — wait until the line starts moving steadily before setting the hook.

Catch and release

Catch and release: wet your hands, keep the fish in the water when you can, and release it quickly. Use circle hooks and a dehooker.

5

Clean & cook

Is it good to eat, and how to prepare it.

Edibility

Good eating when fresh.

Cleaning

Bleed and ice it right away. Fillet, then remove the skin and any dark bloodline.

Cooking suggestions

Popular food fish in India and Bangladesh (boal) — curried or fried.

6

Stay safe & legal

Safety, rules and taking care of the fishery.

Safety warnings

A mouth full of sharp, backward-pointing teeth — use long pliers and a lip grip.

Regulations

Listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN because of overfishing and dams; local state or country rules apply. Releasing big fish helps. In India, river fishing rules are set by each state, and many mahseer rivers are run by forest departments, angling associations or camps that sell permits and require catch-and-release; Nepal, Pakistan and Bhutan have their own permit systems.

Conservation

Release large wallago; populations have dropped across its range.
