BigJoe’s buying guide

Ice Fishing

Safety first: check the ice

Never trust ice you haven't checked. Clear ice of at least 4 inches is the usual minimum to walk on; carry ice picks and fish with a buddy. Follow the local wildlife agency's advice.

The basic setup

An auger, a short ice rod with light line, small jigs and a bucket to sit on is all you need for perch and panfish. Add tip-ups for pike and walleye.

Stay warm, see the fish

A pop-up shelter and insulated bibs turn a cold day into a good one. A flasher shows your jig and fish rising to it, so you know when to jig and when to wait.
