Hilsa rivers, mangroves and the Bay of Bengal
Bangladesh is a country of great rivers: the Padma and Meghna are home to the famous hilsa, the hill lakes hold rohu and catla, and the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest, has seabass and mud crab. Along India's east coast, from Odisha to Chennai and the Gulf of Mannar, anglers chase trevally, queenfish, barracuda and seer fish, and Kerala's backwaters hold seabass, mangrove jack and pearl spot.
Rules: hilsa and many lake fisheries have closed seasons, the Sundarbans wildlife sanctuaries are no fishing, and the Gulf of Mannar is a marine national park. Check with the local fisheries department before you go.
On the bay, in the mangroves or on the ocean, the everyday struggles get left at the dock. For those few hours, it's just you, the water and peace.

- Bangladesh and India's Bay of Bengal and Kerala coasts. Mapped features come from public datasets and can be incomplete or out of date: a missing reef, ramp or wreck does not mean it is not there.

- World Database on Protected Areas (UNEP-WCMC & IUCN), Protected Planet — retrieved November 5, 2026 (license: Protected Planet terms)
