Sac-a-lait, bass and cypress
The Atchafalaya Basin is the biggest river swamp in the country, full of bass, crappie (called sac-a-lait in Louisiana), bream and catfish. North Louisiana has cypress lakes like Bistineau and clear lakes like Claiborne and D'Arbonne.
Along the Mississippi, old oxbow lakes like False River, Lake Chicot and Lake Washington are crappie and bream water, and Mississippi's Grenada, Sardis, Enid and Arkabutla lakes are famous for giant crappie. Ross Barnett Reservoir by Jackson, Cross Lake in Shreveport and Caney Creek Reservoir round it out.
Rules: each state sells its own license, and crappie limits change by lake. Check the state rules before you go.
