Blue marlin, wahoo and dogtooth tuna in the Marianas
Guam and the Northern Marianas sit at the edge of the Mariana Trench, so the water gets deep fast. Boats out of Agat, Hagatna, Saipan and Rota troll for blue marlin, wahoo, mahimahi, skipjack and yellowfin tuna, and the offshore banks like Galvez Bank and Santa Rosa Reef hold dogtooth tuna, giant trevally and bottomfish.
From shore, anglers cast for giant trevally and bluefin trevally from the rocky points, fish the lagoons and channels for goatfish and rabbitfish (manahak), and line the breakwaters when the atulai (bigeye scad) run.
Guam has five marine preserves (Tumon Bay, Piti Bomb Holes, Sasa Bay, Achang Reef Flat and Pati Point) where taking fish is closed or very limited, and the CNMI has its own sanctuaries and reserves. They are marked in red on the map.
