Salmon, lake trout and bronzebacks
The Northeast's cold, clear lakes are home to landlocked salmon and lake trout: Sebago, Moosehead and the Rangeley Lakes in Maine, Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, and Lake George, Seneca and Cayuga in New York. The best fishing is right after ice-out in spring, when the salmon chase smelt near the surface.
Lake Champlain and the Susquehanna River are top smallmouth bass waters, Oneida Lake is a walleye and perch lake, and the Upper Delaware is one of the best wild-trout rivers in the East.
Rules: each state sells its own license, and many lakes have special trout and salmon rules. Quabbin is a drinking-water reservoir with strict access rules.
