Suzuki, buri, itou and Biwa bass
Japan is one of the world's great fishing cultures, birthplace of many modern lures. Sea bass (suzuki) in Tokyo Bay, yellowtail and amberjack in the Kuroshio current, blue marlin off Okinawa, and the rare itou taimen in Hokkaido's rivers.
Lake Biwa produced a world-record-class largemouth bass, and Korea's Busan and Jeju are famous for party-boat rockfish, bream and squid.
Rules: no sea license for visitors, but local fishery cooperatives set rules; rivers and lakes sell day tickets.
On the bay, in the mangroves or on the ocean, the everyday struggles get left at the dock. For those few hours, it's just you, the water and peace.
