Two seas and an island like no other
Yemen sits where the Red Sea meets the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea. The Red Sea side has warm reefs, mangroves and islands full of grouper, snapper and Spanish mackerel. The south coast drops into deep water fast, so yellowfin tuna, kingfish and sailfish come close to Aden and Mukalla. Far offshore, Socotra has some of the wildest giant trevally fishing anywhere.
Before you go: Yemen has had a long civil war, and some coasts and waters near the Bab el-Mandeb strait are dangerous or closed. Check the current security situation, go only with trusted local guides, and follow local rules and the fishermen's cooperatives. Socotra is a World Heritage site with protected marine zones. The summer monsoon (June–September) makes the south coast and Socotra very rough.
On the bay, in the mangroves or on the ocean, the everyday struggles get left at the dock. For those few hours, it's just you, the water and peace.
